keywords in business listings

Updated 22 Oct 20264 min read

In short

  • Keywords are the words customers type or say when looking for your service.
  • Put them in categories, services and description — never in the business name.
  • Include your locality and city, and the questions people ask.
  • Free tools like Google autocomplete and Google Business Profile search terms show what people search.

Customers don't search for your business name — they search for what they need: "AC repair near me", "CA for GST filing in Pune", "eggless cake shop Indiranagar". Using those words in your business listing helps directories, Google and AI assistants match you to the right searches.

What keywords mean for a business listing

A keyword is any word or phrase customers use to find a product or service. For listings, there are four useful types:

  • Service keywords: "physiotherapy", "packers and movers", "GST registration".
  • Location keywords: your locality, city and nearby areas — "Sector 62 Noida", "Andheri West".
  • Modifier keywords: "24 hour", "home visit", "affordable", "for women", "for startups".
  • Question keywords: "how much does a website cost", "which documents are needed for GST registration".

Voice and AI searches are longer and more conversational, so question-style phrases matter more each year.

How to find the right keywords

  1. Google autocomplete: type your service and city into Google and note the suggestions.
  2. "People also ask" boxes on Google results show related questions.
  3. Google Business Profile performance shows the search terms people used to find your profile.
  4. Google Keyword Planner (free with a Google Ads account) shows search volumes. Keyword Planner
  5. Directory category pages: browse categories on GetBusiness and other directories to see how services are named.
  6. Ask customers what they searched for before finding you.

Paid tools such as Semrush and Ahrefs give deeper data, but most small businesses don't need them.

Where to place keywords in your listing

FieldWhat to includeExample
Business nameYour real name only"Mehta Dental Care"
CategoriesYour main service as a categoryDentist, Orthodontist
Description — first sentenceMain service + location"Dental clinic in Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur…"
Description — bodyServices, modifiers, nearby areas"…braces, implants, root canal; Sunday appointments"
Services / productsOne keyword per service"Teeth whitening", "Clear aligners"
PhotosDescriptive file names and captions"dental-clinic-jaipur-reception.jpg"
FAQs (if available)Real customer questions"Do you offer EMI for implants?"

Write for people first

Keywords should read naturally. Compare:

  • Stuffed: "Best dentist Jaipur, dentist in Jaipur, Jaipur dentist cheap, dental clinic Jaipur best."
  • Natural: "Mehta Dental Care is a family dental clinic in Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur, offering check-ups, braces, implants and root canal treatment, with evening and Sunday appointments."

The second version includes the same keywords, reads well and convinces customers. Our guide to crafting compelling descriptions has more examples.

Local keywords for Indian businesses

  • Use the locality names people actually use ("Sec 18" and "Sector 18"), but pick one spelling for your address.
  • Mention nearby areas you serve, not every city in India.
  • Include Hindi or regional terms customers use if relevant — for example "kirana", "tiffin service" or "mehendi artist".

Mistakes to avoid

  • Keywords in the business name — this can get Google profiles suspended.
  • Long comma-separated keyword lists.
  • Keywords for services you don't offer.
  • Copying a competitor's description.
  • Never updating keywords when you add services.

Frequently asked questions

How many keywords should I use in a business listing?

Focus on 3–5 main service keywords and your location, and use them naturally in your categories, services and description. There's no benefit in repeating them.

Can I put keywords in my business name?

No. Use your real business name. Adding keywords breaks Google's guidelines and many directories' rules.

Where do I find keywords for free?

Google autocomplete, "People also ask", your Google Business Profile search terms and Google Keyword Planner are all free.
